Christmas waves a magic wand over this world,
and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.
I have always thought of Christmas time,
when it has come round,
as a good time;
a kind, forgiving, charitable time;
the only time I know of,
in the long calendar of the year,
when men and women seem by one consent
to open their shut-up hearts freely,
and to think of people below them
as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave,
and not another race of creatures
bound on other journeys.
Isn’t it funny that at Christmas
something in you gets so lonely for
- I don’t know what exactly,
but it’s something that you don’t mind
so much not having at other times.
Love is what’s in the room with you
at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.
Christmas – that magic blanket
that wraps itself about us,
that something so intangible that it is like a fragrance.
It may weave a spell of nostalgia.
Christmas may be a day of feasting,
or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance
- a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved.
Blessed is the season which engages
the whole world in a conspiracy of love.
If there is no joyous way to give a festive gift,
give love away.
You tear apart the baby’s rattle
and see what makes the noise inside,
but there is a veil covering the unseen world
which not the strongest man,
nor even the united strength of
all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart.
Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance,
can push aside that curtain and view and picture
the supernal beauty and glory beyond.
Is it all real?
Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
Love came down at Christmas;
Love all lovely, love divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
Stars and angels gave the sign.
Gifts of time and love are surely
the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas.
Are you willing to believe that love
is the strongest thing in the world
- stronger than hate, stronger than evil,
stronger than death
- and that the blessed life which began
in Bethlehem nineteen hundred years ago
is the image and brightness of the Eternal Love?
Then you can keep Christmas.
Christmas Eve was a night of song
that wrapped itself about you like a shawl.
But it warmed more than your body.
It warmed your heart… filled it, too,
with a melody that would last forever.
I don’t want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don’t care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true …
All I want for Christmas
Is you …
Blessed is the season which
engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.
Let us remember that the
Christmas heart is a giving heart,
a wide open heart that thinks of others first.
The birth of the baby Jesus stands
as the most significant event in all history,
because it has meant the pouring into a sick world
of the healing medicine of love which has transformed
all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years…
Underneath all the bulging bundles
is this beating Christmas heart.
